What is a tongue tie?

Tongue-Tie (Ankyloglossia or Lingual Frenulum) is a condition where the membrane underneath the tongue is too tight or short. This can effect tongue function. The reported incidence of Tongue-Tie varies but could be as common as 1 in 10 with half of these causing feeding issues.( Hogan, Westcott, Griffiths 2005)

Anterior tongue-tie is a membrane of tissue that tethers the tongue to the bottom of the mouth, this can be clearly seen. A posterior tongue-tie is when the lingual frenulum is further back and hidden but can be felt during an in depth assessment.

Often tongue-tied babies can have a heart shaped tongue, or a dimple in the end of their tongue where the lingual frenulum pulls the tip of the tongue.

Not all babies with a tongue tie will need to have a division. Early diagnoses, extra support from an infant feeding specialist may prevent or solve problems. Sometimes changes with the way your baby latches at the breast can help improve feeding. Babies with bottle feeding issues may benefit from a change in the style of bottle.
